'Everybody is friendly and everybody speaks to you and says hello. If you need someone you can knock on their door. They're always there to help.'
A half hour drive from Liverpool there stands the second largest oil refinery in the UK and beside it, a small and surprisingly unspoiled village.
"Buildings-wise it's changed a lot, but I'm quite happy where I am. The family more or less keep me going. Compared with many parts of the country, those living there painted Elton as the image of a place that is quietly thriving. Linda, 59, who has lived in the village for thirty years, said the biggest change she had seen was that "it's just got bigger really."
"I don't really have a lot to do with my neighbours as a whole, but I get on with them well. I'm more family oriented than anything. I've got two daughters and a grand son.
