Sir Tom explained that he had chosen the song for his album in memory of his late wife
ITV's singing competition The Voice returned to our screens over the weekend with Sir Tom Jones, Anne-Marie, Olly Murs and Will.I.Am all reprising their roles as coaches on the hit Saturday night entertainment show. Once again members of the public took to the stage for the blind auditions hoping they could get one of the music idols to turn their chair.
The moment came about after former X Factor contestant, 38-year-old Olly asked his fellow coaches what they would sing if they were auditioning for the ITV show, the Manchester Evening News reports. Sir Tom replied saying he'd perform a power ballad and the audience quickly seized their opportunity and asked the singer to perform for them.
Sir Tom went on to explain that he had chosen the song for his album in memory of his late wife, Melinda Trenchard, who died in 2016 from lung cancer, aged 75. He told the audience and his fellow coaches: "My wife, you know, she was dying of lung cancer, so I said, you know, I was always able to fix stuff, I was always able to do things if she needed me for anything I was always there."
The moment also left viewers at home in tears, as many took to Twitter to praise Sir Tom for his vocal performance and the emotional story behind his rendition. "Anyone else sobbing at Tom jones singing #thevoiceuk," Helen tweeted and Chloe added: "I was sobbing like a baby hearing Sir Tom sing that beautiful song but the story about his late wife has absolutely broken me #TheVoiceUK.
