Profound differences remain among Western officials over Nato membership for Ukraine, and fighter jets
Most Nato members want to the fudge the statement and talk about membership sometime in the future. Putin’s friend Viktor Orban of Hungary will try to block Ukrainian membership. Many members are alarmed at the prospect of any sort of short-term bilateral security guarantees that would put the West at war with Russia.
Russian fighters’ radar and missile tech outclass those in Ukraine’s jets. In addition, Ukrainian jets fire missiles which require constant guidance from their aircraft – effectively highlighting the pilots’ position and putting them at added risk of being shot down. The West has to be prepared for ties with the Kremlin to get worse. Moscow has announced it is withdrawing from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe from which, it says, is contrary to Russia’s security interests.
A look at the delusional foreign policy document produced by Moscow in the spring, in which the Kremlin talked of “Russia’s special position as a unique country-civilisation and a vast Eurasian and Euro-Pacific power” suggests normal relations with it won’t be possible with it any time soon.
