The Witcher: Blood Origin review: Showrunner Declan de Barra wants this Witcher spin-off to be 'a punch in the face'. It certainly gave me concussion
On paper, it sounds quite epic and exciting, the perfect binge watch for Christmas. In execution, though, it’s a mess. While six episodes were originally commissioned, showrunner Declan de Barra said it was cut down to four to maintain “optimum story flow”, adding: “I wanted it to be a punch in the face.”certainly feels like a blow to the head.
Take, for example, the concept of warring clans, a seemingly important element for the dynamic between Éile and Fjall but one that gets discarded by the end of episode one. Or the motivations for why Meldof and Brother Death join the quest, which is never truly explained. Or why we should care about any of their quest in the first place.
It’s a shame, as there are roots of some interesting ideas dotted throughout. There’s some exploration into how women grasp at power in a patriarchal society, hints at the insidious nature of a feudal class system and even a weighty moral question about the lengths people will go to cement their legacy. But then that’s all ruined by a needless sword fight, or the introduction of a new character, or some tiresome bit of lore, and any nuance is left bloodied and dead.
A good prequel should provide further context or explanation to an existing story while maintaining a compelling, character-led and necessary narrative of its own. In this regard,Dungeons and Dragons campaign, only to find that the game has been running without you and you don’t know the rules anyway.
