Fans in Ella Toone's hometown of Tyldesley and Piccadilly Gardens reflect on how close the Lionesses came
At 1:16pm today, the Piccadilly Gardens fan zone DJ lowered the audio from the BBC’s coverage and played a song — ‘The Only Way Is Up’.
“The song says it all,” Hollie Southward said as the music blared. “They have done us proud from start to finish. Annie Spicer, also 28, put a similar face on. “I am so proud of them, Spain were too good for us today,” she told the M.E.N. “I am gutted but I am so proud. In Tyldesley, fans at Ella Toone’s local, the Union Arms, painted a similar picture. “Ella Toone, a local girl in our town brought this - she deserved that win," said landlady Sharon Mattin. "We’re immensely proud, everyone loves her.”
“She inspires all the young girls, even the men - everyone around here. It has people believe that she can achieve great things like she’s doing. I couldn’t be any more proud of her, I’m just absolutely gutted the team couldn’t bring it home but they’ve still done so well, they’re a young team, a lot of young players, and we’re just ready for the next one to win it next time.”
“I’ve known Ella since primary school and even when she left everyone still spoke of her - she’s an inspiration," said Molly Thorpe, 15. "She’s absolutely incredible.
