There’s a one-off preview of the Blackpool Illuminations - but you’ll need a bike
Each year Blackpool’s promenade lights up with the iconic illuminations, as dozens of colourful displays line the shore. Visitors from far and wide flock to the seaside resort to watch the famous light switch on and this September Johnny Vegas will be doing the honours.
But there is a way you can get a glimpse of the Blackpool Illuminations before they are officially switched on this September by Johnny Vegas. For one night only on Tuesday August 30 the promenade will close to traffic for Ride The Lights, giving cyclists the chance to enjoy the illuminations three days before the switch on.
In this family-friendly event anyone on a bike will be able to ride along the seafront route and admire the displays as they go. Participants are encouraged to have some fun and decorate their bikes with their own lights. The event is suitable for all ages and the event will be completely free.The promenade will be closed to traffic from 6.30pm until 10.30pm, with the Ride The Lights event taking place from 7pm until 10pm.
Then on Wednesday August 31 Trinity Hospice will stage its annual Night Run, starting on the Tower Festival Headland opposite Blackpool Tower. Finally the official light switch on will take place on Friday September 2, with Johnny Vegas doing the honours. The celebration will take place in the Tower Ballroom with performances by Blue, Tom Grennan, Mae Muller, with more guests set to be announced. The illuminations will remain on until January 2.
