If there’s one culinary experience you must try in Glasgow before you die, it’s a chippy followed by a 99 with raspberry sauce.
The décor of the café has never changed too, only adding to its charm. Modest in size but full of character, the café is fitted out with booths made from dark wood panelling – shaped by hand by Gino’s grandfather, who was a ship carpenter on the Clyde. But it’s not just in Glasgow that the name of University Café is known and loved. The late legendary American chef Anthony Bourdain once visited the café and ordered haggis along with fish, chips, and curry sauce.
The time in which the café first opened was regarded as the golden era for these types of family-run local eateries, and Glasgow was full of them.Sadly, household names like Kings Café, The Garden and The Continental have left us over the years, making institutions like University Café something of a dying breed.
