“I’ve never done so little and got so much attention!”, says celebrity make-up artist Sharon Dowsett.

“I got stranded in Tobago for 18 months!” she tells me over Zoom, by way of explanation. “We were due to fly back the day the first lockdown started in the UK, and said we’d stay another two weeks. The next day, the borders shut until July. There was no way off the island.” While it was arguably not the worst place to spend a year and a half, Dowsett and her husband were staying in a small room in a remote village, with few facilities, in a country that was in a state of emergency.

Beauty, of course, took a back seat, with the nearest chemist a “two hour drive away, around mountains – think hairpin bends and sheer drops”, no box hair dye for sale, and certainly no access to professional colourists. Meanwhile, Dowsett’s hair was growing, and the greys were taking over, just as nature intended. “If I could have had something done, I would have – for sure. Some of the local women did look at me and say I looked terrible.

Sharon, whose hair used to be shoulder-length and brunette, with a fringe, had decided to address her increasingly arduous hair upkeep routine before that holiday. “I was obsessed with my roots giving the game away and had ended up at the hairdresser every three weeks getting them done. Boring, expensive, and it takes time,” she says, explaining that, pre-pandemic, famed colouristhad helped her segue towards a lighter colour to make the regrowth less noticeable.

“I’ve never done so little and got so much attention – honestly!” she tells me. “I see my local hairdresser for maintenance, but we don’t use any chemicals. I shampoo and condition withonce a fortnight, and leave it in for five minutes , which keeps the silver fresh and brass-free.” She now celebrates the idiosyncrasies in her silver strands, noting that she has a white streak at the front of her head, and darker tones through the back.
