“It’s no time to be tired. No time to be afraid. I will go for it.” The Wimbledon Men's Final could be a match for the ages. And Carlos Alcaraz is ready for it. ✍️ NickMiller79
Production on the long-awaited sequel to Gladiator was halted this week, after the Hollywood actors’ union called a strike over pay and conditions. But if they need someone to fill in for any big rousing speeches, they could give Carlos Alcaraz a call. Not on Sunday, though. He’s busy then.
Medvedev really didn’t play that badly in this match. He made 19 unforced errors in the three sets: for reference, on his way to beating Jannik Sinner in his semi-final, Djokovic made 21. Sinner made 35. On a few occasions, Medvedev half-stopped during points, seemingly because he couldn’t have fathomed Alcaraz reaching the ball, only to see him reach the ball. You can’t blame him: this kid has no respect for the laws of physics. After one particularly violent serve, Medvedev shrugged in the direction of his coaches.
Djokovic has won the last four finals here. The only one that was a genuine contest was against Roger Federer in 2019, an epic that went literally as far as it could possibly go, Djokovic winning a 12-12 tie-break in the fifth set after Federer had two match points. Kevin Anderson showed grit in 2018 but was eventually overpowered.
