Vaughan Gething wants to ensure it is not another lifetime before there is another black or mixed race politician makes it in WalesONE OF the most senior black politicians in the United Kingdom is calling for more black people to get involved in politics. is a Welsh Labour and Co-operative politician and is currently serving as Minister for the Economy in Wales, and has held this prestigious position since May 2021.
He says not voting is not an option for minority communities and added: “I really worry about communities that don’t vote because they end up not getting what they deserve.” However, he describes these accomplishments as “great” but wants people also look at his track record and remember he is actually great at his job. In 2011, he was elected to the Senedd to represent Cardiff South and Penarth. he is always willing to raise issues that affect the black community and hopes to see a more diverse political landscape across Wales in the coming years.
He said: “The UK desperately needs a period of stability and cooperation to focus on the many challenges we face. He said: “My dad wanted to move back to Wales, he got a job offer that was withdrawn when he went to visit again with my mother and gather of brown children.” Mr Gething said one of the most significant news stories he can remember during his childhood is Nelson Mandela being in jail and then being released on 11 February 1990 – which he said had a profound impact on him.
In 2022, Wales became the first nation in the United Kingdom to make Black History mandatory in all schools. Schools in England are not currently required to teach Black History and Mr Gething believes the rest of the UK will eventually “catch up” and make it compulsory. , the reviewing historic statues and place names is necessary across the UK, and is proud that Wales’ first black headteacher Betty Campbell was honoured with a statue in Central Square, Cardiff, last year.
He said: “There was no way of getting out of the responsibility and as well as all of that within Wales, you are dealing with other governments around the UK and that wasn’t always perfect.”WALES’ FIRST BLACK MINISTER: Vaughan Gething He said: “We’re not going to have the capacity in the Welsh Government to do everything that we would ideally want to do and that’s because lots of these choices inevitably have to come from Westminster.
