You have not pictured Doctor Rebecca Struthers – working class, tattooed, snappily dressed, northern and neither middle-aged nor a man.
There is a tendency for watch writing to be a closed shop – to get bogged down in the technicalities of watches and watches alone.puts them into cultural and historical context, combines that with the story of Rebecca’s singular career, and assembles the parts against a backdrop of the whole history of time. It’s also a really fun read.I think they are interesting!Yeah, I really wanted this book to be accessible to a wide range of people. It was really important not get too nerdy.
It’s definitely a thing of interest. One thing Britain has done very well, historically, is design and trendsetting. Whether that’s watches or fashion… music, film, culture, we do that well. So we already have an audience of people interested in what British designers and makers are doing. And some brands are doing an amazing job of getting out there. What Bremont are doing is phenomenal. I think 70 per cent is made in the UK now.
On that note, in the book you quote your husband Craig as saying the industry is populated by ‘woolly-hatted, cream-horn-eating, walking-sandal-and-sock-wearing, garden-shed-tinkers’. What can he possibly mean? I’ve chilled out a bit. I’m a lot better about picking my fights now. I was up for a fight with anyone when I was younger. Whereas now, unless it’s really bad, I’ll let a lot go.
