Pope Benedict’s lying-in-state: Thousands flock to Vatican to pay respects to former pontif ahead of funeral
, where the 95-year-old former pope,two days after Pope Francis called on the faithful to pray for him as he was “very sick”. Most of Pope Benedict’s eight-year papacy was hounded by child sex abuse scandals, although he was credited for kickstarting the process to discipline or defrock predator priests after a more lax attitude under his own predecessor, Pope John Paul.
The funeral service on Thursday will not have the usual pomp of a papal funeral. The ceremony, which will be led by Pope Francis, is expected to be low-key, in line with the Pope Emeritus’ wishes for “simplicity”.
