Britain must take the threat of EU trade punishment "seriously" if it chooses to tear up the Northern Ireland protocol and impose unilateral changes, a former top diplomat has told LBC.Lord Kim Darroch, who served as UK ambassador to the US as well as permanent representative to the EU and national security adviser, said the possibility of retaliation from the EU in the form of trade penalties should "absolutely" be taken seriously.

He said the situation the UK and EU have found themselves in was "always going to happen". The Northern Ireland Protocol, which governs trade between Great Britain and Northern Ireland to ensure goods do not need to be checked at the politically-sensitive border with the Republic of Ireland. "What has happened in terms of the restrictions and checks on trade crossing the Irish Sea, was always going to happen if the government chose to... put the border, the external border to EU, in the middle of the Irish Sea," he said.podcast Tonight with Andrew Marr only on Global Player.
