Time has run out in the UK’s efforts to evacuate citizens from Sudan, with the final flight leaving the country on Saturday.
Sudan is in the throes of a deadly conflict, as the Sudanese military and paramilitary RSF battle for control of the country. At least 400 people have died, with the true toll thought to be far higher, and many civilians are sheltering in their homes.from an airfield close to the capital of Khartoum. The vast majority of these are British nationals and their dependents. The Government say this is “the longest and largest evacuation of any Western country” during the Sudan conflict.
It is not clear how many people were expected to be evacuated on the final day, with the number determined by how many people arrived at the airfield. A soldier from the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment talks to the evacuees during the evacuation of British nationals.
