Time to hit the brakes on decline of Glasgow after cycling championships | Record View

The UCI World Championships brought a mammoth crowd and beamed the very best of Glasgow to millions of homes worldwide. But it will take more than a glitzy event, no matter how big, to bring back the civic pride the city has lost in recent years.

The city is an easy sell on a warm July day, with more than 100,000 Glaswegians eager to show visitors their famous sense of hospitality. But if we scroll forward to a cold and wet November and hear of yet more businesses going to wall, the feelgood gains of the cycling spectacular will have ebbed from the memory.

It is crucial all ideas should be fully considered on how to bring a revival. With a business closure rate four times worse that of Edinburgh’s, Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Government must be open to all suggestions on how to turn the ship around. The MP for Ashfield in Nottinghamshire has told asylum seekers that “if they don’t like barges then they should f*** off back to France”. It beggars belief that the deputy chairman of the party in government could say such a shameful thing about people who come here seeking refuge.
