Piel Island is home to the Ship Inn, off the Furness Peninsula in Morecambe Bay
An application for 30 ground-mounted solar panels to the rear of Piel Island’s Ship Inn pub, off the Furness Peninsula, was given unanimous approval by the borough council’s planning committee on Tuesday.
Cllr Therese Assouad, the borough council’s lead member for climate emergency, said: “We have an ambitious vision for Piel Island through our Net Zero Piel project and we have taken a significant step towards this. The panels will generate almost 14kwh of power every day – enough to meet the minimum requirements of the Ship Inn which are presently met with a diesel generator.
In a report produced ahead of Tuesday’s meeting, case officer Maureen Smith said the array of solar panels would cover an area of around 21m by 6m. Delegated power to give final approval to the solar panels was given to the council’s development services manager.
