Imagine living in a village that could literally be completely wiped off the face of the Earth at any minute. It sounds like the stuff of disaster movies, but that’s exactly what's facing the people of a picturesque hamlet in Switzerland.
The village sits under a mountain where two million cubic metres of rock is coming loose
Every single one of the 84 residents have now been evacuated from Brienz, which sits in the eastern canton of Graubunden and is known for its dramatic Alpine scenery. Village dairy farmer Giorgin Bonifazi says rocks bouncing down the side of the mountain sounded 'like a train' Giorgin, who has lived in Brienz his whole life, said: 'The destructive power that the mountain could bring is terrifying to think about and so we have taken the advice of the authorities and left - only a madman would stay.
