Tom Kerridge says ‘massive’ issue with alcohol could have killed him ChefTomKerridge
Tom Kerridge is lifting the lid on the hospitality industry and its challenges in his new BBC Two show - although the Michelin-starred chef believes he wouldn’t be here to film it if he hadn’t quit drinking 10 years ago.
For Tom, that obsession turned into a poisonous one. “You’re just pushing and pushing and pushing and you need a release valve. Mine was through alcohol and it’s self-absorbed. It doesn’t matter what else is around you.” On the actual day, BBC Two will be debuting The Hidden World of Hospitality, with the fine dining-themed first episode taking viewers behind-the-scenes of Tom’s flagship restaurant, The Hand and Flowers. But letting cameras into his kitchen proved to be just as “nerve wracking” as hosting a show about his weight loss, Tom reveals.
“If they were making that much money, they would all exist and every restaurateur would be absolutely minted and loaded and they’re not,” Tom says. “Two out of three restaurants go bump in the first two years and it’s because they can’t afford to operate. It is incredibly difficult to make cash out of.”
