Tommy McCarthy fights Michal Cieslak for the European cruiserweight title on Saturday night in Poland
Tommy McCarthy was close to quitting boxing after his world title showdown with Arsen Goulamirian fell through at the eleventh hour back in September.
The pair will collide in Poland tonight, in a fight that has been labelled as 'win or bust' for McCarthy by some onlookers, including former two-weight world champion Carl Frampton. "I then got a phone call for this fight at five weeks' notice, but I was training away anyway so I decided to go for it. My fitness was still good so I concentrated in getting the sparring in.
"I lost to Richard Riakporhe who is ranked number one in the world, and earlier in my career I lost to Matty Askins who was also a world-ranked fighter.McCarthy lost back-to-back fights against Chris Billam-Smith, who went on to win the WBO world cruiserweight title.
