The legislation meanwhile came under attack from senior Tories across the political spectrum as MPs considered 20 Lords amendments to the Bill.

Mrs May said the bill would “enable more slave drivers to operate and make money out of human misery, it will consign more people to slavery”. Mr Loughton and former Cabinet minister Sir Robert Buckland also signalled they would rebel to back a Lords amendment on setting up more safe and legal routes for refugees to disincentivise them from crossing the Channel in small boats.
