The backlash continues after Sky News reported that the northern leg of HS2 is going to be scrapped. Meanwhile, Suella Braverman is set to address the Tory conference on the heels of her controversial migration speech.
Pledge tracker: Is Sunak keeping his promises? With the general election approaching within the next 17 months, Sky News has developed a tool to track the government's progress in delivering those pledges. In pictures: PM and Braverman out and about on day three of Tory conference
It is expected that Suella Braverman will use her conference speech to address"failings" by the party - particularly on immigration.Chancellor Jeremy Hunt held firm on tax cuts, despite growing pressure from his colleagues at the Conservative Party conference on Monday. The idea of a tax cut is dividing Tories - with former prime minister Liz Truss calling for the chancellor to"axe the tax".
"Just because someone has a particular attribute and [is] coming from a country where that attribute is not persecuted, it doesn't mean that attribute is automatically one that would entitle them to asylum. We also asked about Suella Braverman's assertion - backed up by cabinet colleagues - that some people pretend to be gay in order to"game the system" and claim asylum.
"I hope the government sticks with the policy that, after all, it so enthusiastically advocated in the past."At the"Rally for Growth" organised by short-lived PM Liz Truss yesterday, Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg said he had asked her to impose a flat rate of tax at 20% across all income brackets. We asked Sir Jacob about the proposal this morning, and he told Sky News it was based on the"economic success" that Estonia has had with it, as well as Treasury costings.
Asked why he supports the decision to scrap HS2, he said simply:"Because it costs too much money and [...] it's unaffordable against what else you would do with the money."He did note that even in the Victorian era Britain overran on big projects, but he asserted that"roads have been the greatest contributor" to economic growth of any infrastructure project.
