But the decision was condemned by Tory MPs who warned the move would mean a “whole generation of people who will see this as a sign that Conservatives are not on their side”.
And in a direct attack on Mr Sunak’s command over his party, the Tory added: “Leadership means doing the right thing, not the expedient one. This is not good.” Welcoming Mr Gove’s announcement, Ms Villiers said the Government had “listened” and the reforms would “rebalance the planning system and give local communities a greater say over what is built in their neighbourhood”.
