Incident comes just a day after the historic site finished its four year-long restoration
An Irish tourist has reportedly broken a famous statue in Brussels, just one day after the site reopened to the public following a four-year-long restoration costing €90m . The Bourse, the former home of the Belgian city's stock exchange, is of huge cultural significance.
The man was then arrested by police at a nearby fast food restaurant and reportedly claimed he was unaware of the scale of the damage he caused. According to estimates, it will cost around £15,000 to repair, which the Brussels Stock Exchange is said to make the tourist pay. He continued: "The whole building has only just been restored to its former glory, including the two lions which were in a bad way. We thought the sculptures would enjoy greater respect. We just think it's very sad this happened."
