The Nottingham Panthers star suffered a 'freak accident' in a game away to the Sheffield Steelers
Floral tributes have been laid after the death of Nottingham Panthers player Adam Johnson in a 'freak accident'. The Panthers were playing against the Sheffield Steelers on Saturday when Adam was seriously injured, with the 29-year-old appearing to have suffered a cut to his neck from a blade at the Sheffield Arena.
The death of the "outstanding ice hockey player" and "great teammate" was later announced by his club, which described the incident as a "freak accident". Supporters and those wishing to express their condolences have now placed floral tributes and messages outside of Nottingham's Motorpoint Arena, Nottingham Panthers' home stadium.
A tribute penned by fans of Glasgow Clan, who the Panthers were supposed to play on Tuesday before it was postponed after Adam's death, said: "Adam, family and Panthers organisation. Thinking of you all at this difficult time." In a letter addressed to "Adam 47" in reference to his shirt number, one group of mourners said: "Our hearts are breaking, you will be forever missed and forever in our hearts. Sending all our love to family, friends and teammates.
"Everyone at the club including players, staff, management, and ownership are heartbroken at the news of Adam's passing. Our thoughts are also with the fans and staff of both clubs, especially those who attended or were following the game, who will be devastated following today's news. "The Panthers would like to thank everyone who rushed to support Adam last night in the most testing of circumstances. Adam, our number 47, was not only an outstanding ice hockey player, but also a great teammate and an incredible person with his whole life ahead of him." The Panthers have said updates will follow in due course regarding future fixtures.
