ENGAGING in a little nostalgia can help soothe discomfort, a study has found. Experts found that symptoms can be dampened thanks to a region of the brain called the thalamus which modulates pain.

This large area of grey matter located just above the brainstem is involved in relaying information between the body and the brain’s outer layer, the cortex — and is critical for pain modulation in humans.In their study, psychologist Dr Ming Zhang and her colleagues at the Chinese Academy of Sciences measured the brain activity of test subjects who were shown a series of images while being subjected to painful thermal stimuli.
