Trophy hunters pay huge sums for the right to shoot an animal – $250m a year in South Africa alone, according to reports. And hunting advocates argue that this protects land and wildlife from other, destructive land uses. Pre-pandemic, in 2018, the World Travel and Tourism Council estimated that wildlife tourism was contributing $343.6bn to global GDP each year – equivalent to the entire economy of Hong Kong. Watching wildlife in its natural habitat was directly responsible for 9.1 million jobs worldwide.
