Kay has had an affection for birds since she was young and as a special treat for her birthday, she was taken to visit a tropical birds sanctuary where she got to pet and feed them, bringing back many happy memories

These days the 99-year-old resident loves to watch the birds visiting the bird feeder close to her room at her care home. However when she confided in staff that she would dearly love to go and see tropical birds again they arranged a special visit for Kay to go to Tropical Birdland in Desford. Set over 6.5 acres of idyllic countryside, the Desford visitor attraction is home to over 250 birds and features walk-through aviaries, gardens, woodland and Koi ponds. Many bird species including parrots, toucans, hornbills and owls are on display, with the chance to interact with some, while other birds are allowed to fly out-of-doors during visiting hours.
Claire Barrett, senior team leader at RMBI Home Devonshire Court, who accompanied Kay, said: “It was a fantastic afternoon. Kay had the time of her life. She was still a natural around the flock of birds - much better than we were!”
