Lillard could have been like Brooks Robinson and Larry Fitzgerald, but the days of iconic players staying with one team are all but gone.

This is considered the age of empowerment for professional athletes, and that’s positive in significant ways. Athletes should have greater control of their careers. But the increased power comes with a downside for old-timers like me, one of them being the loss of romance we used to associate with sports.During my youth — which admittedly came before the ice age — iconic players regularly started and finished their careers with one team. They were considered family to us.

Brooks Robinson played 23 years for the Baltimore Orioles, from 1955 to 1977. . Regarded as the greatest shooter and one of the greatest players in franchise history, Lillard was considered a local treasure, someone so closely associated with Portland that his name was as synonymous with the city as craft beer, bike paths and nature.

Player empowerment is often traced to the 1970s and Curt Flood’s fight to end baseball’s reserve clause. Although he ultimately lost the case, which was argued before the U.S. Supreme Court, it created a pathway to free agency and let players know they did not have to accept the status quo. Many of the accompanying changes have been good for athletes, but at the same time, they have been challenging for an adoring public.
