Labour shadow health secretary, Wes Streeting on govt plans to use RAF bases to house migrants, and the potential that barges might also be used. 'I don't think it's going to solve the problem,' he said.
Shadow health secretary Wes Streeting from Labour has been speaking to us about government plans to use RAF bases to house migrants, and the potential that barges might also be used.
He added:"The fundamental problem we've got to deal with here is that it takes far too long to process claims". Asked if he thinks using barges would be a deterrent for people wanting to come to the UK, Mr Raab said that hotels are an"incentive" and the government needs to lower the £6m daily bill for keeping people in them.
One of the bases being considered for housing migrants and asylum seekers is RAF Wethersfield in Braintree, Essex. It said in a statement:"Following the council's ongoing considerations and concerns relating to the Home Office proposals to secure accommodation for asylum seekers at Wethersfield Airfield, we are preparing to apply to the High Court for an interim injunction.
"One might be cynical and say all these local elections coming up - they would say this, wouldn't they."The fundamental problem is they're not processing applications quick enough - they haven't been doing that for several years now." Speaking in the House of Commons last year, Home Secretary Suella Braverman said in response to a question about cruise ships that"we want to end the use of hotels as quickly as possible because it's an unacceptable cost to the taxpayer".
The government is still considering using ferries or converted barges for a similar process, but this is not expected to be announced today.
