Has surreal pop-up city sold its soul to the corporate world?
It’s often said that there are two sides to every story - and this idiom ran through the 2023 incarnation of Boomtown Fair like the basslines that reverberate around this jaws-to-the-floor festival.
Billed as Chapter 2: The Twin Trail, the spectacular music and theatre extravaganza held over five days in August in the South Downs National Park once again overwhelmed the senses of 60,000 people with its scale, inventiveness and attention to detail. Boomtown is renowned for its elaborate set designs, interactive storyline and eclectic musical programming. Its labyrinthine layout sucks attendees - referred to as ‘citizens’ - into a pop-up city which becomes increasingly more surreal, the deeper one delves into its various districts.The titular Twin Trail could refer to the different approaches festival-goers take to exploring this incredible adult playground.
This huge henge - which dominates the landscape and looms over the city that surrounds it - almost defies description. It’s a massive, mesmerising megalithic marvel - with waterfalls, flamethrowers, huge video screens - and enough lasers to arm a Death Star.
