British households are buying fewer – and less expensive – presents in a pared-back Christmas driven by the cost of living crisis.
A majority of Britons have cut back on their Christmas spending amid the cost of living crisis, an official survey suggests. Nearly four-in-five of those who have reined in spending said they were buying fewer presents, while nearly three quarters said they would buy less expensive presents. Most of those cutting back on spending also said they were buying less expensive food and drink , buying less food 56 per cent and drink, or eating out less , according to the Office for National Statistics research.
The pared-back Christmas planned by many was likely to be driven by the fact that a vast majority believe the cost of living to be the most important issue in the UK, followed by the NHS , the economy , and climate change and the environment ., 60 per cent of adults said they were worried about keeping warm this winter and around a quarter reported they were struggling to keep comfortably warm in the two weeks leading to 18 December amid a cold snap.
