Experts warn Covid cases remain high despite the slight drop, with one in 10 people aged under 25 currently infected 🔴 Exclusive from BawdenTom

He said it was unclear whether the slight decline was because so many people have been infected by Covid in the past six weeks that the nation had built up a temporary immunity – with immunity from prior infection thought to give reasonable protection for around two months.could also be factor as this is safer than indoor meetings.

Whether we have just passed the peak of this wave or have a bit further to go, the latest figure provides further evidence that cases are unlikely to go much higher for the time being. Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales were already plateauing and now England appears to be following suit, according to the ZOE app.Even if we have reached a peak, however, scientists urge caution because infections are extremely high and unlikely to fall over the summer in the way they did after earlier waves.

Furthermore, a much bigger wave is expected in the autumn, which could see daily symptomatic infections climbing to around 600,000-650,000, Professor Spector said last week. Professor Karl Friston, a virus modeller, said: “Our modelling suggests that in the Autumn wave Covid prevalence will exceed any previous wave and be about twice the current peak.”
