The boss of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, is thought to have been on a plane that has crashed near Moscow, killing 10 people onboard. Meanwhile, three more Ukrainian drones have been shot down over Russian regions overnight.
Flight tracking website Flightradar24 says it first received data from the aircraft at 2.46pm local time. Nine minutes later, it had stopped transmitting data.
"One wing flew off in one direction and the fuselage went like that," Vitaly Stepenok told Reuters, gesturing with his arms to show how the plane headed down towards the ground. "I just saw the number on the plane, which I told them, and that was it." Mr Putin was speaking via video link at the closing news conference of the three-day summit held in Johannesburg.We've heard a lot of theories around what downed the jet supposedly carrying Yevgeny Prigozhin. Rumours continue to circulate online that the passengers on the plane were gifted with a crate of wine, which later exploded.
He is set to give a five minute statement, according to the BRICS website, via video address from Moscow. The Interfax news agency said 10 bodies had been recovered from the site, updating the previous figure of eight reported by some outlets.We are still yet to hear from Vladimir Putin, and we've no official word from the Kremlin either.
