However other estimates have put Ukrainian gains at closer to 3,500 square kilometres.The counter-attack was focused on the sparsely defended north-eastern areas of Ukraine in the area around Kharkiv.
According to the resource GlobalFirePower, at the start of 2022 Ukraine’s estimated total military personnel stood at just 500,000 compared to more than 1.3m in Russia. The National Institute for Strategic Studies in Kyiv estimates that Russia has sent between 200,000 and 250,000 troops to Ukraine and the US estimated last month that between 70,000 and 80,000 Russian troops have been either injured or killed during the war. By contrast, Ukraine has claimed to have an army of over one million people.
