Ukraine war latest: Russia launches wave of more than 100 missiles, rockets and airstrikes - as hundreds evacuated from near nuclear plant

The mayor of Kyiv has called this morning's attacks the biggest since the invasion began.

Sean Bell described the attacks as"one of the biggest volleys" ever launched by Russia so far and, as air raid sirens blast across Ukraine, he said it is likely to continue. Ukraine also celebrates victory over the Nazis in the Second World War today, and Russia is"almost certainly" trying to"quell celebration" because it undermines propaganda accusing Ukrainian leaders of being Nazi sympathizers, Bell said.

Yevgeny Prigozhin threatened to withdraw his Wagner troops from Bahkmut, the epicentre of the war, and Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov added pressure by making moves to fill Wagner's position and impress Vladimir Putin, which would have weakened other parts of the frontline currently held by his forces, according to the Institute for the Study of War.

Ukrainian military bloggers said they could have been triggered by a Russian warplane armed with hypersonic weapons taking off.Alarms are regularly heard in Ukraine, particularly near the frontline, but the scale of the alert could indicate more strikes are to come.Drones have been part of the military inventory for decades, but the war in Ukraine has seen a massive escalation in their exploitation.

The Zaporizhzhia region is expected to be an area targeted by Ukraine when it launches its counteroffensive, and the UN's nuclear watchdog has warned of the"threat of a severe nuclear accident". Authorities are"almost certainly" attempting to avoid or delay unpopular mandatory conscription to"minimise domestic dissent", the defence ministry said.Recruiters have been offering sign-up bonuses of £1,890 and salaries of up to £3,290 a month, Radio Free Europe reported.

As many as 16 missile strikes targeted Kharkiv, Kherson, Mykolaiv and Odesa regions, plus 61 airstrikes and 52 rocket salvos on populated areas and military positions, said the general staff of Ukraine's armed forces.
