The new sub-variant called BA.6 by scientists is causing concern, with one expert dubbing the strain the 'real deal' as cases spread.
The new strain is a subvariant of Omicron with dozens of mutations. The subvariant has not yet been officially named, but it referred to as BA.6 by scientists, with cases identified in Israel and Denmark so far.
The new variant is understood to possess an unusual ability to mutate, meaning it may be able to circulate more efficiently. Unique mutations are sometimes found in people with severe Covid infections or chronic illnesses. However, former advisor to the Central Virology Laboratory at Sheba Medical Centre suggested that this was not true of the cases recorded in Israel in an interview with the Jerusalem Post.
