Unearthed 1994 Tesco receipt reveals some surprising prices
Liverpool-based marketing manager Jess Corcoran recently took to Twitter to share a receipt she discovered that was printed nearly 30 years ago. Found in the pocket of a trench coat she bought from second-hand retailer Vinted, the receipt originated from the Bar Hill store in Cambridge.
Dated February 15, 1994, it listed purchases totalling £5.67. The receipt shows four pints of milk cost 84p, self-raising flour was 72p a bag, table salt cost 38p and Red Mountain cost £1.59 a jar, but was on a two-for-one deal, the Liverpool ECHO reports.If you were to buy the same products today, through Tesco online, four pints of milk would cost £1.45, while a 1.5kg bag of self-raising flour can be bought as cheaply as 58p - less than the 1994 shopper paid.
Between 1994 and present day, the price of four pints of milk has gone up by 72.6%. Inflation is currently at 9.9% - its highest rate for four decades. Jess' tweet read: "Bought a trench coat from Vinted a few weeks ago, and just put my hand in the pocket tonight. Look at this old shopping receipt from @Tesco which is older than me".
At the time, a number of people responded to Jess's tweet expressed their surprise at the prices. Twitter user Ruth Writes said: "A four-pint of milk for 84p! What a time 1994 was!."
