Describing 'Walkout Wednesday' as just 'the beginning', union chiefs have warned that mass co-ordinated strikes could continue until at least the summer

summer as part of long-term plans to pressure the Government to agree to increased pay offers.

On Wednesday, 100,000 PCS members, 300,000 teachers from the National Education Union , 70,000 lecturers from the University and College Union joined forces to protest the Government’s anti-strike legislation. Aslef union train drivers and London bus drivers also joined the day of mass action.: “This is the beginning. Half a million people are on strike today. I think we will probably see bigger. If [the Government] won’t put money on the table we will see this grow and grow and grow.

PCS chief, Mr Serwotka, said it “makes sense” for different unions to work together to achieve pay agreements with the Government. Emergency service workers represented by Unison are set to continue striking in the coming months, with the disruption likely to “escalate” if the Government does not listen to their demands for a pay increase, according to Unison head of health, Sara Gorton.

“Without this, health workers and their unions will have no option but to set further strike dates into the spring. By then, it’s likely too that more ambulance workers and other NHS colleagues will have joined the dispute.”, but continue to consider individual walkouts in order to put pressure on the NHS and Government without causing harm to the public

“The appetite amongst members is strong, they’re very cross, especially with the anti-strike legislation. It feels like it’s disproportionately victimising ambulance workers for their efforts.”
