Mr Varadkar was speaking at an Irish unity rally in Dublin organised by Ireland's Future
A united Ireland will only succeed if its creation is endorsed by convincing majorities in the north and south of the island, Leo Varadkar has said.
Some members of the audience at the 3Arena booed when Mr Varadkar outlined the structures that he thought could potentially be retained in the event of reunification. “It is a noble and legitimate aspiration, and one that I share. It is an idea that has come a long way in a very short time. Mr Varadkar said a recurring theme in Irish history was the failure to find a “solution that works for all”.
“There is a distinct danger that we could focus too much on a border poll and on future constitutional models, and not enough on how we enhance engagement, build trust and create the conditions for a convincing majority for change, which is what we want “Our only hope depends on presenting a proposal – north and south – that will be able to achieve democratic consent and this will involve compromise.”
“Colleagues, it cannot be a forced set of relationships, it cannot be based on ultimatums or demands. He told an audience of around 5,000 people inside the 3Arena that the phrase “united Ireland” was viewed by some unionists as incendiary and suggested the term “Union of Ireland” might be more palatable as a concept for people from his community.
“That they have prosperity, that they are not marginalised, and that they can be proud to be from the north of Ireland in a new union of Ireland.” “I am certainly very keen on embracing anything in which the relationship between the people in the north is improved, and between north and south and between these islands, and it strikes me that I think a lot more people are coming round to the idea of just even considering themselves Irish.”
“I would also include in that discussion the Irish diaspora across the world – a debate that I do not believe we have ever had.
