Universal Credit claimants could go to court and pay penalty if they fail to report one of 13 changes

Universal Credit claimants may have to pay a penalty or be taken to court if they fail to report any changes in their circumstances.

People may be eligible for the benefit if they are on low income, out of work or physically cannot work, the Express reports. It is paid monthly and based on individuals' circumstances.Basing it on circumstances is dubbed the 'assessment period', starting on the day someone makes their claim. If you're single and under 25, you could claim £292.11, if you're single and 25 or over, you can claim £368.74.

Changes in circumstance can affect how much you're paid over the assessment period - not just the date you report it.On the DWP website it states: “You could be taken to court or have to pay a penalty if you give wrong information or do not report a change in your circumstances.” If you live with a partner, you'll both need to create accounts, which will be linked together. People cannot claim by themselves.
