Pastor George Daniel Ekatre was a minister and community activist from the Calabar region of Nigeria who arrived in Liverpool about 1915 and established the African Churches Mission in Hill Street, Toxteth in 1931. The grave marker is the second in a series of memorials to be placed highlighting the presence and important contributions Black people have made to Liverpool’s long history.
Pastor Daniels campaigned against the shipping line Elder Dempster on behalf of Black seamen, from the UK and elsewhere, in the 1930s because they were paid less and had worse living conditions and rations than their European counterparts. The mission also provided a hostel and community facilities for up to 10 orphaned children, a canteen providing cheap meals, breakfasts for local children, music and secondary school classes, and helped people in financial hardship.

It was closed to children in 1949 and after that it served the seamen and became a worship centre.
"The Mission was a big place and these people tried to catch us, but they couldn’t. They brought reinforcements and still couldn’t catch us."
