Dangerous driving conditions, transport disruption, power cuts and mobile phone outtages should all be expected, says the Met Office
The Met Office says a period of freezing rain and some snow could cause a danger to life in and around the Greater Manchester area today .
The national weather forecaster has issued an 'Amber' weather warning, which covers the eastern side of Greater Manchester and comes into force at 9am and lasts until 8pm. The warning area covers several major motorways, including parts of the M60, the M62 and the M67. A number of roads in neighbouring areas - including Cheshire, Yorkshire and Derbyshire - have already been closed due to snow and ice, and crashes including jackknifed lorry. Further disruption is expected across the region.A 'yellow' warning is also in place over the rest of Greater Manchester, from 7am until 9pm. The Amber alert says a "period of freezing rain and some snow will lead to some disruption" .
The warning also says that "dangerous driving conditions may occur, leading to road traffic collisions, road closures and longer journey times; while pavements and cycle paths may become impassable". It adds that "Bus, train and air travel may be affected by delays and cancellations" and that "there is a good chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage".
