US declares monkeypox a public health emergency

The announcement will trigger extra resources and other measures to curb the spread of the virus.

Xavier Becerra, the health secretary, said: “We’re prepared to take our response to the next level in addressing this virus, and we urge every American to take monkeypox seriously.”over the outbreak on July 23. The WHO chief said the outbreak in more than 70 countries had become an “extraordinary” situation that could spill over into more countries, and so requires a coordinated global response.

In the US, a quarter of monkeypox cases have appeared in the state of New York, which last week issued its own state of emergency.The declaration on Thursday will help speed up theMonkeypox is transmitted through close contact. It is not sexually transmitted, but most cases are thought to have been transmitted during sex.

Officials in the US have recommended that people at the highest risk of exposure, including some gay and bisexual men, as well as some healthworkers, should be prioritsed for the vaccine.for some healthworkers; gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men; and people who have already had close contact with a patient with confirmed monkeypox.
