The sharp-tongued manager is the show's new MVP because her least appealing qualities are rooted in a very genuine pain
– which concludes tonight with a feverishly anticipated finale in which we’ll finally find out which guest were found dead in the opening episode – nobody is quite what they seem. Nobody is quite likeable, either, but part of the show’s brilliance is its ability to make us empathise, at least sometimes, with characters who behave with a heinous sense of entitlement.
At this point, enterprising sex worker Mia asks her what we were all beginning to wonder. “You’re gay, right? I’m a little bit gay too,” she says with a casualness that shocks deeply closeted Valentina. Suddenly the fact she appears to lack friends or any kind of life beyond the hotel isn’t just sad, but quietly devastating.
Because the show’s writer-director Mike White is a sly genius, he had stealthily set up Valentina’s camp credentials from the start. In episode one, she welcomes randy grandad Bert Di Grasso to the resort with a sweet but sharp dose of verbal limoncello. “I mean, I’m impressed that you’re even here,” Valentina tells him with an impeccable poker face.
