Justin Verlander is heading to Queens. The Mets are signing the two-time World Series winner to a two-year, $86 million deal, sources confirm to Ken_Rosenthal. Verlander reunites with Max Scherzer in New York.

Verlander spent the first 12-plus seasons of his career in Detroit before getting traded to Houston in 2017. He owns a 3.24 career ERA and 1.117 WHIP and is widely considered a future Hall of Famer.

Verlander has said he wants to chase 300 wins; he’s got 244 and could make a serious run at the milestone. The Tommy John surgery was the first significant injury of his career. This is quite the statement at the start of the Winter Meetings from Mets owner Steve Cohen and general manager Billy Eppler. Just like that, the Mets are back with two aces for 2023. They effectively replacedwith someone close to his level who some evaluators would say is the better bet of the two to make 28 starts.

The Mets, with how their roster is constructed and how flush they are with cash, are in win-now mode. The best pitcher on the market for winning now was Verlander. It’s fair to harbor concerns about a rotation headlined by older co-aces —is 38 — but it is also easy to see why one evaluator recently said, “He’s the rare type of pitcher where age just doesn’t matter anymore.”

Verlander, long known for his bulldog mentality, has continued to refine his game to stay at an elite level. The addition of Verlander also gives the Mets an ace for 2024, which is quite useful considering Scherzer can opt out after 2023 and the Mets aren’t full of great internal starting pitching options. —Evaluating the financial commitment

No other team in baseball is paying a starting pitcher $40 million annually. The Mets are paying more than that to two starting pitchers. No other team in baseball has two quite like the Mets’ pair of Verlander and Scherzer, though. There’s risk in this strategy, clearly, because of the aces’ ages, but the Verlander deal made a whole lot of sense for New York.
