Residents are worried about the lack of schools, doctors surgeries and dentists
The UK is currently faced with not one, but multiple housing crises at once. Homeowners are struggling to pay their mortgages and the country is faced with a lack of social housing.
Whilst most are happy to see the changing face of the area, the increase in population does naturally put a strain on nearby resources. As more and more houses are built, the need for more shops, schools, pubs and amenities is made apparent. Like his neighbours, Robert appreciates the new road, particularly as the alternative is not the best. He said: "The road, Sandy Lane, is in a bad state.
"We've lived here for six years now and everything just seems to be so slow with the progress. Probably too many houses and not enough facilities. Dentists, the doctors are over-subscribed and yeah, it's a problem." "All the areas and stuff, we all have to pay a charge each year to look after and maintain it and they're useless at it. Pavements are all cracked, roads are deteriorating - nothing gets fixed, nothing gets sorted. It's just what you live with I suppose."
Originally, Caroline grew up in nearby Ingol and has seen the whole of Cottam and wider area change over the years, with the mass amount of housing that's been brought to the area. She said: "Obviously with the amenities, it's the same with all new housing areas. April has also lived in Cottam for a similar amount of time to her neighbours, having had her property for six years. She said that for the whole time she's lived there, she knew it would build up more due to additional housing. However, she also mentioned the primary school that was promised when she was initially moved in, which hasn't come to fruition. "Nothing seems to have come of it, which is really disappointing," April said.
Courtney moved into her property in 2017 and when she moved in, the developers promised a nearby shop would be built.
