.Balmain’s creative director ORousteing invited RinaSawayama to choose favourite looks from his decade at the helm.
Rina Sawayama grew up watching the Brit Awards, and has particularly fond memories of the 2002 ceremony, when Kylie Minogue was memorably lifted onto the stage on a giant CD to perform a mash-up of her monster hit “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” with New Order’s “Blue Monday”. “Her outfit was amazing,” Sawayama recalls now of the pop singer’s white mini dress and silver thigh-high boots. “She arrived in this CD thing – it was incredible.
Shaking up the two biggest awards ceremonies in British music aside, it’s been quite a year for Sawayama, who dropped her debut album,, in April 2020, as the world was newly in lockdown. “It’s really weird because I still haven’t been recognised since I’ve released the record, because I’ve had my mask on and I haven’t really gone out that much!” She’s out out tonight though – and wearing archive Balmain.
