People have the chance to walk in the shoes of eight women and a man found guilty of witchcraftThe last witchcraft trial to take place on the island of Ireland is being brought to life in a new virtual reality experience.A young girl new to the area, Mary Dunbar, had accused them of bewitching and tormenting her, culminating in a dramatic trial.The majority were sentenced to a year in jail and forced to do time in the public stocks.
Research from across the university's north-west campuses was also used to bring the centuries old story to life. "We wanted people to give people a sense of what it means to be persecuted and that feeling of being disorientated, confused and alienated and even nervous when you know everyone is against you."The story of the Islandmagee Witches has also being told through the medium of a graphic novel
"One of our students from creative musicianship even created this beautifully bespoke score for the experience. Through virtual reality technology, people can step into Mary's shoes and discover what it might feel like to be possessed. Sentireal CEO Tom Houston said the company used cutting edge VR technology to bring the story to life.If a person was convicted of witchcraft they could serve jail time, be put in the stocks or even face the death penalty
