By Shanet Susan AlexJul 2 2023Reviewed by Benedette Cuffari, M.Sc. In a recent study published in the journal PLoS ONE, researchers explore the relationship between C-reactive protein and vitamin D levels in older adults.
Vitamin D has been linked to chronic diseases like cancer, cardiovascular disease , and diabetes in prospective and observational studies. The inflammation modulation and maintenance of endothelial function through the effects of vitamin D on asymmetric dimethylarginine kinetics are proposed mechanisms for these relationships.
About the study The researchers utilized frozen non-fasting whole plasma samples to analyze blood biomarkers. CRP and 25-hydroxyvitamin D D) concentrations of 5,381 community-dwelling Irish participants aged 50 years or older from the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing were measured. Vitamin D deficiency increases risk of inflammation The mean age of the participants in the study was 62.9 years, 53.5% of whom were female. The obesity rate of the study population was 33.9%, the mean body mass index was 28.6 kg/m2, and 70.8% of subjects reported being physically active.
Mean CRP concentrations were significantly lower in study participants who were male, younger, had tertiary education, were non-obese, non-smokers, and did not have more than three chronic conditions.
The logistic regression analysis indicated that those aged 80 years or older, 25D deficiency, smoking, obesity, female sex, chronic conditions, physical inactivity, and high glycated hemoglobin and creatinine levels were negative correlates for elevated CRP status.

“They want you to know who they really are inside of the old visage”—biographical storytelling as a methodological tool to explore emotional challenges in old age - BMC GeriatricsBackground Growing older is often associated with resilience, contentedness and inner growth. Older people however are also at risk of confronting unique emotional challenges as a result of varied ageing-related experiences. By employing a biographical lens, we aim to introduce storytelling as a methodological tool to more holistically explore older people’s emotional challenges and to improve their wellbeing. Methods Building upon theoretical understandings about the narrative construction of identity across the life span, we draw upon a qualitative study about older people’s loneliness as an example to showcase the methodological value and feasibility of biographical storytelling. We aim to better understand the nuanced and sometimes painful emotional experiences that can be encountered alongside ageing. Results Findings from the qualitative study we showcase, highlight that unique emotional pains and the (in)ability to deal with such in old age could be deeply rooted in older people’s earlier lives. These findings contextualise people’s emotional challenges and needs within their identity, as a narrative thread that links their past, present and expected future. As such, our example study shows that emotional challenges in old age are not only ageing-related, but can be more fundamentally connected to disruptions to the ongoing flow of narrative identity construction. Conclusion The highly retrospective and reflexive nature of these findings illustrates the methodological merit of biographical storytelling. We argue that the impact of biographical storytelling can go further than both conventional semi-structured narrative interviews and existing interventional tools. Instead, it is a particularly useful research methodology to explore human experiences and needs in the unique context of ageing. This methodological development thus provides an insightful analytical lens to explore how older people’s earlier life experiences may be carried forward and confronted t

10 states, including Mass., plan to sue EPA over standards for residential wood-burning stovesAttorneys general from 10 states plan to sue the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, saying its failure to review and ensure emissions standards for residential wood-burning stoves has allowed the continued sale of appliances that unduly worsen pollution. They say that means programs that encourage people to trade in older stoves and other wood-burning appliances, such as forced-air furnaces, haven’t necessarily improved air quality. The EPA declined to comment. The states filed a 60-day notice of intent to sue Thursday. Alaska, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Vermont and Washington are involved in the action, along with the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency.
