The way Naomi Campbell was dressed by Westwood was revolutionary, writes Ateh Jewel
Helena Christensen, Naomi Campbell, Vivienne Westwood and models walk the runway for a Vivienne Westwood show during Paris Fashion Week The world has lost true icons with the passing of both Pele and Vivienne Westwood. Tributes have come pouring in forand her legacy, art and activism. Growing up, she meant so much to me.
I had the pleasure of meeting Westwood and interviewing her backstage at fashion week. I thanked her for her art and always picking diverse models, she said “of course” and seemed shocked people wouldn’t want to have a diverse runway show, which made me love her a little bit more.Westwood perfectly encapsulated the best of British, with punk, rebellion, a respect for history, craftsmanship, glamour, construction and deconstruction all mixed up in one bonkers and delicious dream.
She also understood the toxicity around colourism and used dark skinned models in her shows in a world where brands, if they cast any black models, would choose those with lighter skin tones and Western European features, to make them seem more palatable. Westwood shunned all that and I loved her for it.Westwood represented inclusion and diversity in so many ways. She was born in Derbyshire in 1941 and attended art college for one term before dropping out.
